Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP)

Updated: May 22, 2023

We get a lot of questions on our popular red team certification - Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP). This post tries to address some of them. I decided to write this in form of FAQs :)

What is Certified Red Team Professional?

Altered Security's Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP) is a beginner friendly hands-on red team certification. It is one of the most popular beginner Red Team certification.

A certification holder has the skills to understand and assess security of an Enterprise Active Directory environment. You can buy it here - https://www.alteredsecurity.com/adlab

How Much Is Certified Red Team Professional?

$249 for 30 days on-demand course and Attacking & Defending Active Directory lab access or $299 for instructor-led bootcamp with 30 days lab access.

You can also opt for 60 days or 90 days lab access depending on your experience with red teaming and active directory security. Check the "Purchase Options" tab on the course page - https://www.alteredsecurity.com/adlab

What are the requirements for CRTP certification?

To get certified, a student must solve a 24 hours hands-on exam in a fully patched Enterprise Active Directory environment containing multiple domains and forests. Like the course, the certification challenges a student to compromise the exam environment using feature abuse and functionalities.

How long does it take to study for the CRTP?

From one month to three months - depending on your skills. Please use the below table for lab duration:

Course and Certification

Beginner (No experience)

Intermediate (Some experience of Red Team and Enterprise Security)

Expert (Good experience of Red Team and Enterprise Security)

Attacking and Defending Active Directory / Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP)

3 months ($499)

2 months ($379)

1 month ($249)

What is the goal of the CRTP exam?

The 24 hour hands-on exam consists of 5 target servers in addition to a foothold student machine. The goal is to OS level command execution on all 5 targets.

Who owns the Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP)?

Altered Security owns the courses, labs and certification name. We used to offer this in partnership with Pentester Academy. However, the reseller contract ended on 15th January 2023.

Does the Certified Red Team Professional (CRTP) certificate expire?

Yes, the CRTP certificate has a validity of 3 years to keep up with changing technologies and skill requirements. You can renew the certificate without any additional costs. You can find the renewal process here - https://www.alteredsecurity.com/post/renewal-process-for-altered-security-certifications

Does Attacking and Defending Active Directory or CRTP labs use updated Windows version?

Yes! The CRTP labs are updated to Server 2022. The lab mimics a real world enterprise environment and the users need to rely on misconfigurations and feature abuse to challenge the lab.

What is the difference between CRTP on-demand and CRTP bootcamp?

Go for CRTP on-demand (https://www.alteredsecurity.com/adlab) if you want to learn at your own pace. The course content and lab are same as the bootcamp.

Go for the CRTP bootcamp (https://www.alteredsecurity.com/crtp-bootcamp) if you want to learn in an instructor-led class on 4 weekends. In a bootcamp, you get to interact directly with the instructor, learn with a group and exchange notes with security professionals from across the globe.
